DETAILS OF DEATH

In the early hours of 18 December 1938 Constable Murphy went to Leinster Street Paddington following a complaint of two intoxicated men causing trouble. The Constable located one of the men and as he attempted to arrest him the offender struck the Constable a heavy blow to the right eye. Constable Murphy managed to subdue the offender however he was again attacked and kicked in the groin and the offender escaped. He was quickly arrested by Sergeant White. On 10 September 1940 the Constable was admitted to the Mater Hospital North Sydney for a tumour on the right side of his brain. The condition proved to be fatal and Constable Murphy died seventeen days later. The Constable was born in 1895 and joined the New South Wales Police Force on 1 July 1919. At the time of his death he was stationed at Paddington.
