DETAILS OF DEATH
Sobczak on special road safety duty died instantly after the police motorcycle he was riding collided head-on with a motor vehicle on a highway near Tungkillo in the Adelaide Hills. The State honoured Sobczak with a police funeral at St David’s Catholic Church Tea Tree Gully on May 30. After the service a formation of motorcycle officers led his hearse through a police guard of honour lining both sides of the street outside the church. On its way to Centennial Park cemetery the cortege passed by Sobczak’s last post Holden Hill police station. Officers who had lined the footpath outside stood to attention and saluted. Other police formed another honour guard at the cemetery. Sobczak who was born in Woodside and raised in Loxton joined SAPOL as a 19-year-old in 1969. By 1973 he had moved into traffic policing in which he remained for the rest of his career. He was survived by his wife Julie and children Renee Luke Kara and Cain.
