DETAILS OF DEATH

Deputy Commissioner Lewis was the only passenger in a motor vehicle which left the road at the eastern end of the Victoria Bridge at Devonport and plunged into the Mersey River. Deputy Commissioner Lewis drowned but his special constable driver Leigh McKay aged 45 was dragged from the river unhurt. Apparently the Deputy Commissioner managed to wind the window down a few centimetres but the damage to the vehicle prevented any further progress.
