About 8 p.m. Saturday 16 May 1959 Constable Carey was driving a motor cycle outfit along Mercer Street Geelong when he collided with a taxi. The outfit overturned and Carey was thrown to the roadway receiving fatal head and internal injuries. He died in Geelong Hospital the following day.
