Constable 1st Class

John Hawkes MALONE

YEAR OF DEATH

1947

JURISDICTION

New South Wales

DETAILS OF DEATH

About 11.15am, 1 May 1947, Constable Malone was one of two Police Public Safety Bureau motor cyclists returning to Sydney along the Bathurst Road, after escorting a military convoy. Whilst negotiating a bend near Medlow Bath, just north of Katoomba, the Constable’s motor cycle and side car collided head-on with another vehicle. As a result of the accident, which the Coroner considered was probably caused by some mechanical defect just prior to the accident, Constable Malone sustained severe head injuries and died in the Katoomba District Hospital later that day. The Constable was born in 1912 and joined the New South Wales Police Force on 29 April 1935. At the time of his death, he was attached to the Public Safety Bureau.
