About 1 p.m. Saturday 10 August 1895 Mounted Constable Hoyem was at Quandong Hill one and a half miles on the Benalla side of Devenish having just completed his regular monthly patrol of the locality. He had just finished speaking with Mounted Constable Chenhal of Dookie and Mounted Constable Slattery of St. James and was attempting to mount his horse. It shied and he was thrown to the ground. His skull was fractured and he died three and a half hours later.
