About 12.35 p.m. Thursday 14 May 1987 Senior Constable Smith was undergoing motor cycle riding instruction together with five other police students. They and their two instructors were riding their motor cycles along Skenes Creek Road 2.8 kilometres south of Wild Dog Road Apollo Bay. Smith failed to negotiate a right hand bend ran off the road and hit a tree dying instantly.
