About 7.15pm on 24 January 2002 the Student Police Officer was a passenger in a police vehicle at Dapto. He was undergoing police training at the time. The vehicle was en route to a traffic accident and heading along the F6 Freeway when the driver lost control and collided with an oncoming truck. The student sustained critical head and internal injuries and was admitted to the Wollongong Hospital. He passed away on 1 February 2002. At the time of his death the Student Police Officer was on the field placement phase of his training at the Lake Illawarra Local Area Command.
