DETAILS OF DEATH

About 4 p.m. 8 August 1854 Constable Lindsay was on duty with Constable De Laird guarding four prisoners. The prisoners were inside a tent with Constable De Laird and Constable Lindsay was on guard outside. Constable De Laird heard a gun shot and went outside to find that Constable Lindsay had accidentally shot himself in the right arm. Constable De Laird was unable to help Constable Lindsay at that time as the prisoners were trying to escape. Constable Lindsay was taken to hospital where it was decided due to the nature of the injury that the only option was to amputate his arm. Following this procedure his condition worsened and he died the following day.
