About 12.30 a.m. Thursday 9 September 1987 Sergeant Thompson was on patrol duties. He was conducting a routine vehicle check on the Midland Highway North Geelong when he was struck and killed by a passing car. The driver of the offending vehicle failed to stop at the accident scene but was later located and charged with a number of traffic offences
