About 11.30 a.m. Thursday 29 January 1982 Senior Constable Henry was performing a motor cycle patrol along the Hume Highway at Wandong near Seymour when he attempted to intercept a recklessly driven car. Unknown to him the driver an escapee from a Sydney Psychiatric Hospital had stolen the vehicle and had committed many serious offences in Melbourne during the previous two days. As the Senior Constable drew up to the car the driver fired a sawn off .303 calibre rifle at him and the bullet struck the policeman in the head. Although mortally wounded Senior Constable Henry attempted to use his radio to alert his colleagues. Soon after the offender was intercepted by other police after a brief gun fight. Senior Constable Henry died on the morning of March 1 1982 without regaining consciousness.
