DETAILS OF DEATH

Two bushrangers who had committed a violent robbery in the Campbell Town area of Van Diemen’s Land several weeks previously were located in the Fingal Valley by local police. Several shots were fired by the bushrangers at the police. Constable Buckmaster was caught up in the shooting and was fatally shot by one of the bushrangers later to be identified in the court proceedings as James Dalton.
