About 11.15 p.m. Monday 4 April 1938 Constable Bateman was driving a police motor cycle outfit in pursuit of a speeding motorist in Lygon Street Carlton. Near the intersection with Curtain Street the offending vehicle crashed into the rear of another motor car. Bateman swerved to avoid a collision and struck a tramway pole receiving fatal injuries.
