DETAILS OF DEATH

William Hyde was shot five times by a gunman in Kensington on January 2. He fought hard for his life in hospital but lost his battle two days later. The murderer seen with two accomplices loitering near the Marryatville Hotel had seemed poised to rob the Tramways Trust. But when Hyde approached the three villains fled. The determined officer gave chase and tried to make an arrest before the shooter’s bullets cut him down. Despite the offer of a reward for information leading to the capture of the offenders, no one was ever brought to justice for killing Foot Constable Hyde.
